Why A Positive Attitude Helps In Coping With Arthritis Pain – Part 1

By Cathy Posner Think Positive To Relieve Arthritis Pain. My name is Cathy Posner and I live in Wauchope which is on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia. I was born in 1957 and in late 2004 was told that the aches in my joints were Rheumatoid Arthritis. My husband, Ray has a very positive approach to everything and I guess that has rubbed off on me, so rather than sit back and let things progress I decided to see what I could do for myself. Let me give you an example of Rays positive attitude. In September 2003 he had to have open heart surgery to replace his aortic valve. We live on 160 acres so before he went into hospital he slashed a walking track so that he could regularly exercise when he came out of hospital. Not only that he left the tractor set up for slashing. Four weeks after surgery, even though he was not allowed to lift anything heavier that a 2 liter bottle of milk (about 4 pints) he got the OK to slash the paddocks as long as he did big easy turns at the end of each run. (Actually I think he secretly enjoyed having me open the car door for him and carry the groceries.) So, as you can see, in his mind there was no way that he wasnt going to get back to a normal life as quickly as possible, but within the guidelines of what the Doctors told him. Now when you live with someone like that its hard not to take a positive approach. How can having a positive attitude help you in your fight against the pain and difficulties arthritis can cause? I know some of you already reading this have a positive approach so please bear with me. As I was saying Rays positive attitude helped him in his recovery. I dont know how much pain he was in but I can imagine it was considerable. After all you dont have your sternum sawn in half and rejoined without pain. In fact for some time he had to clutch a folded towel to his chest whenever he coughed or went to the bathroom but he never complained once. He just got on with life within the restraints set by the Doctors and in fact even started a new business while he was recovering. OK you might ask how does this relate to me? I know pain can be an all consuming, overpowering feeling but you need to get your mind off it. If you sit back and wallow in self-pity your days and nights will drag, you will become depressed (or even more depressed) and your pain feeds upon itself your mind magnifies the intensity of your pain and you feel even worse. If this describes you and my comments offend you then I am sorry but hopefully what I am about to say will be a wake up call for you. What are the benefits of having a positive attitude? Well to start with your mind can be trained to focus on things other that your pain. When it does, your pain is shut out creating a sense of feeling better. This feeling feeds on itself in the same way that if you allow yourself to focus on your pain, it seems to get worse. Can you learn to have a positive attitude? Of course you can. If you are still breathing you have the ability to learn. And really it is not so much learning but altering the state of your mind. All you need is the desire to help yourself, to get relief from your pain and overcome obstacles that your arthritis creates for you. May I suggest some things you can do? How is your lifestyle? Do you look after yourself? Your wellbeing is very important to how you feel and influences how you think. Diet and Exercise are important to your overall health. If you are not eating correctly and doing some exercise within your limits, you are not helping yourself in your fight to get arthritis pain relief. To read more about diet, foods that can help, foods to avoid and to get some great tips on getting started with exercise simply click on the link at the end of this article and then follow the links on the home page. I recommend you read a book on Positive Thinking. There are some excellent publications available and most will give you the tools you need. Sit down and relax. Think back to when you didnt have the inconvenience and pain of arthritis. Pick a point in time when you were doing something that you enjoyed. Now focus on that thing. Experience it again. Feel the emotion associated with it. Live it. Breathe it. Be there in your mind be that person that you were then. Do this 2 or 3 times a day for 5 to 10 minutes at a time. Tip: if you sit down and find you go to sleep, try standing up. This technique helps to reprogram your subconscious to think pain free and you should find that your pain decreases or may actually go away. You can also use this anytime your pain starts to get the better of you. Just go back to that time when you were pain free and allow your mind to again experience that feeling. This really works. But dont just do it once you must do it every day, without fail and you will soon see the benefits. The Money Making Secret of “The Toll Booth Position”

By Dan Kennedy Im a marketing consultant and at one of my client-companies, a company that, in less than 10 years, has gone from a $10 million to a $100 million dollar business one of the people I work with frequently has jokingly given herself the title, ‘Vice President, Back-End.’ Although that clearly opens her up to be the butt of many jokes, it does very accurately describe her very, very important area of responsibility, in direct marketing parlance. At least 80% of the companys profitability depends on her contributions. If the term “back-end” is new to you, it means everything you sell your customers after their initial purchase (that first order is called the “front-end”). For instance, lets say you sell instructional video tapes to golfers on how to play better. You advertise in golf magazines and your lead product is a $25 video on putting strategies. Thats your “front-end” because thats what people buy first. But then once people purchase that first video, you send them a catalog offering them over 50 other golf videos ranging in price from $50 to $99. Those follow-on videos are your “back-end.” In many businesses, there is a relatively brief period of time during which there are significant, exciting profits on the front-end, that is the very first sale to a customer. But that happy situation dissolves over time, as you “cream” the market. And, as you go deeper and deeper into a market, the cost of making the first sale (acquiring a customer) goes up and up. For instance, in the above example of the golf videos the first time you run a magazine ad you might pull 100 orders. But if you keep running it every month, your order volume will probably drop off steadily. Within six months, youd be lucky to be selling 30 videos from the same ad in the same magazine. As some point, it gets so high it is no longer practical to advertise and sell that product to that market. Nothing is forever. This fact of life is what mandates being smart about making all the money that you can from the back-end. The good news is that your satisfied customers are probably willing to buy other things from you — and they dont even have to be your own products/services. You can make deals with other companies to offer their products/services to your customers in exchange for a piece of the action. For instance, lets go back to our example of the golf video company. You might do a “joint venture” with a manufacturer of special golf clubs which sell for $1,500 a set. Youll mail a letter to your customers telling them how well these clubs will improve their golf game and youll get $750 on each order placed. If your customers trust you, theyll be much more likely to respond to your letter than they would be if the golf club manufacturer mailed to them directly. Of course you only want to recommend high-quality products and services which will be of value to your customers. But you get the idea. You could make similar deals with other companies who sell what golfers want — golf apparel, golf trip and excursion operators, even custom home builders who sell houses near golf courses. Theyd all happily pay you a ‘toll’ commission to sell their wares to your customers. No matter what your business, one of the most valuable assets you have is a list of satisfied customer, predisposed to buy from you again. When you control a sizable list of customers who bought from you, know your name/business name, are happy with what they bought and with the ensuing relationship … and are pre-disposed to read your mail and buy from you again, its like owning your own “toll booth.” A pioneer of direct marketing, Harvey Brody, taught me the power and value of getting into “The Toll Booth Position” and Ive been teaching it for years. Imagine owning your own toll booth on the highway near your city. Anybody who wants to get to the other side of that toll booth has to pass through its gates and pay you money. As the controller of a responsive customer list, thats exactly where you are; sitting there in your own toll booth and anybody who wants to get their appropriate product or service to those customers you control, has to pay you money. You can collect a toll through joint ventures, as described above wherein you do an endorsed mailing to your customers and get a piece of all sales that result. Or, if you build a list of 50,000 or more, through outright lists rentals. I have a number of clients who pay all their overhead expenses every year just with the checks they get from the list broker representing their list to others. I have often paid others to pass through their toll booths — and done so cheerfully. I have also been paid by others eager to get through my toll booth, to my customers, with my endorsement. In the direct marketing business, its a well-known fact that most of the profits is derived from back-end sales to existing customers. Yet outside that business, I rarely encounter a company which comes anywhere close to tapping the potential of establishing their own “toll booth position.” Get started building yours right now and start charging others to go down your road. We’re Too Fat!

By Martin Harshberger Americans are too fat! And we’re getting fatter! Does the headline shock you? Does it make you angry? Well it should. We’re being lied to, manipulated and marketed literally to death. And very few of us are investing the time or the energy to learn why it’s happening and how to resolve the issue. Not only that we’re hiding from the problem. We convince ourselves that “yeah, I’m overweight, but I’m healthy”. That my friends is an illusion. An Associated Press article from our local newspaper on January 11th, details a study done by Northwestern University of 17,643 patients over 3 decades. The study found that being overweight in mid-life substantially increased the risk of dying from heart disease later- even in people who began the study with healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels. The takeaway from the study is that “middle aged people who are overweight, but have normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels are kidding themselves if they think their health is just fine.” I also read an article in our local paper that said over 2 in 5 teenagers is unable to pass a low level physical fitness test. What that tells me is the problem is getting worse and at a younger age. My only question is when is enough, enough?? When is the average American going to accept the fact that he or she is responsible for their own health and wellness? I read in a book by Dr. Paul Zane Pilzer that obesity in America is an economic problem. He states that “only in western countries are poor people fat.” There are probably numerous reasons for this but I attribute it to two things; 1. Lower income families are more reliant on high fat, high sodium processed foods. 2. Lower income families are less likely to invest time and money into education on things like nutrition, exercise and fitness. That being said, what about the great middle class? Folks in this category have options. They have at least some disposable income, they have access to the information, and most if not all have the education to read and understand it. The question is then do they have the commitment? In beginning my on-line company I have taken numerous courses, and several have been in copy writing. Copy writing is learning to write ad’s to sell my products and services. The thing that I’ve heard over and over is “people will not spend one dime on prevention but they will gladly spend money on a cure.” That just seems backwards to me. This is what the $35 billion dollar diet industry has learned and why the continue to offer miracle cures for obesity, fitness, and wellness. How many ad’s have you seen in recent years that end with the statement, “It’s EASY, you’ll love it”? They sell things that way because that’s what we want to hear. If it was easy and if the miracle cures worked obesity would not have increased by 20% over the last ten years. We all owe it to ourselves and to our loved ones to be the best we can be. To do that we must take the time and make the commitment to learn what works and what doesn’t in the areas of fitness and weight control. We all make choices each and every day. The choices we make today in regards to health and wellness can impact us for years to come. We’re living longer today, but the question is what are you doing to insure your quality of life? People form habits, and habits form futures. What future are you forming? Martin Harshberger is the author of several books on wellness and nutrition. Why Dieting Often Fails As A Solution For Obesity

By Donald Saunders For most people facing obesity and morbid obesity the first line of attack will be for their doctor to recommend a strict program of both diet and exercise. Millions of people across the world are dieting at this very moment. Indeed, in the United States alone, it is estimated that one out of every three adults is currently on some form of diet. For many dieting will succeed in the short term but, for the vast majority of people, not only will any weight lost be regained but many will end up weighing more than before they started their diet. So why do so many diets fail? We live in an age in which speed is all important and we want whatever we want right now and not tomorrow or next week. Dieting is no exception and most people want to see rapid results and so set themselves unrealistic goals such as losing twenty pounds in a month. When this doesn’t happen they then simply blame the diet and either give up altogether or move on to another diet with the same results. Trying to lose weight steadily at about one or two pounds a week is fine but anything over this is simply not sustainable in the longer term. The next problem for many dieters is that they fail to organize their social life around their diet. Now it’s not being suggested here that you should put your social life on hold while you’re dieting but abandoning you diet once a week for your Friday night dinner with friends is not going to work. By all means continue to enjoy a full social life but include whatever you’re eating and drinking as part of your diet plan. This might mean substituting fresh fruit for your usual baked Alaska but that’s the price you’re going to have to pay if you want to lose weight. Another problem for many dieters is that dieting can be expensive and take a surprising amount of effort. Most diets are also boring. Preparing diet meals often means buying healthy food alternatives, which are not always easy to find and can be expensive, and then spending a lot of time preparing a meal which often leaves you wondering if it was worth the effort. The limited choice of foods available for many diets also means that you soon get tired of eating the same old thing every day. Yet another difficulty which most dieters encounter is that of calculating both the calories they are eating and the calories they are burning up through exercise. It is not at all uncommon to underestimate the former and overestimate the latter. This is all well and good and is probably enough in itself to show why most diets fail. However, all of this pails into insignificance alongside the real reason for the failure of most diets. The majority of dieters set out on their diet with the best of intentions and many will research their chosen diet thoroughly and even draw up a detailed and comprehensive diet plan. In nine cases out of ten however these plans are simply too complicated and dieters don’t stick to them! Dieting is not rocket science. In fact dieting is simply a matter of reducing your intake of calories and burning off calories through exercise. If you put together a simple plan to do just that and don’t rush things but take your time and lose weight at a pound or two week you’ll be surprised just how easy dieting is. Forget Weight Watchers, the Atkins diet and all the other money making diet products out there and simply cut down on your calorie intake and exercise a little more and, in time, you’ll shed those excess pounds. Flower Bulbs in Dry Climate

By Robbie Darmona Spring flower bulbs in dry climate can really grow into beautiful and healthy plants, if you keep to several rules of thumb. Gardeners from southern part of Australia are often eager to complain about the dry conditions that ruin the greenery of their gardens. Indeed, weather in southern Australia, as well as in other hot places on the earth, can be a great obstacle to anyones gardening efforts. But with some precautions on our side, we can learn to handle with the weather and use hot climate even as a helpful tool to change our gardens to their best looks. Flower bulbs need special treatment and most of the gardeners are soon to forget about it. If you plan to seed your flower bulbs in a hot and dry climate, youd better choose drought tolerant plants. They are reliable and can beat the hot climate and grow to their utmost despite the temperature inconvenience. Flower bulbs are an excellent choice if you plan to pick up drought tolerant plants. The flower bulbs of almost all types of flowers are a natural reservoir of nutrients and moisture, and can endure the unfriendly conditions. They are wrapped up in special flakes, which are very thick and can prevent from warming. Flower bulbs are a storage organ and can be the perfect preservative against harsh conditions. Another privilege that flower bulbs have is that most of them are basically planted in the autumn. The cool winter months prevent the flower bulbs from heat, and they have time enough to grow and develop in the fertilized soil. After the winter has gone, spring evokes the flower bulbs to pop up, and beautiful floral shoots are soon to unfold. Flower bulbs can also be planted in April- May, in the spring months, which are not very hot. They can have the opportunity to develop during the hot times, and spring up in the early autumn. Flower bulbs are extremely stable in hot conditions, because they have they own environment, which is created by the substantial content of the bulb. Thats why spring flowers are grown even in the hottest climate conditions. There is large variety of colors and nuances that every type of flower bulb can offer. You should pick up the color combinations and flower types from flower bulbs stores, which are largely visited by gardeners in the period April-May. The longer you delay planting time, and leave the bulbs for warmer months, the more likely it is going to be that nothing will spring up. You should be very careful when picking up the planting time, in accordance to the soil temperature and properties, to the weather forecast for the summer months, and to the advice that experienced gardeners will give you. You success also depends on the fertilizer that you use. If you use a proper one, which suits the conditions of soil in your garden, you are very likely to have your flower bulbs turn into beautiful plants. Flower bulbs such as soldier boys, spring stars, crocus, freesias, ixias, and grape hyacinths are extremely extensive in comparison to others. Thats because they are likely to produce more flower plants, and have shoots for many years to come. They need not be replanted every year, unlike other flower bulbs. Anemones and ranunculus, for example, are not as endurable as the above mentioned. They need annual replanting and a lot of care. They can be grown in the winter, which is their main positive side. Their flower bulb is fleshy and contains a lot of nutrients, which explains why they can endure the chilly conditions. But they can also be grown in every other season. These two types should be planted every winter, if you like to have them spring up in the spring. Unlike other flower bulb spring plants, they can bloom for several weeks, and they require almost no care as soon as they have sprung up. They are essential flowers for every garden in the spring. Cheating Wife

By Mark De Smit Helpful Tips For Ensnaring A Cheating Wife The popularity of the television program entitled Desperate Housewives might be an indication that more and more women are unhappy about their married life. The program, it seems, is a reflection of what is happening in most American homes. Since many husbands tend to prioritize work over their family, many wives nowadays are increasingly tempted to have an illicit relationship. It is surprising to note that the lovers that most wives chose are usually those they get into contact with everyday, such as their officemate, gardener, plumber, or even the pizza delivery guy. Since women will most probably enter into an affair because of emotional connection, rather than sexual satisfaction, Internet chat rooms are also venues where the wife and a possible illicit lover usually meet and fall for each other. Although men are considered insensitive about emotions, it will still be easy for husbands to detect their wife is cheating on them. Telltale signs of a wife’s infidelity include lost of sexual appetite, change in behavior toward her family, more time dedicated to work, sudden change in the way she looks, and disinterest in sharing feelings and thoughts with the husband. The first thing you need to do, if you feel that your wife is cheating on you, is to collect proof and connect the facts. You cannot just confront your wife on a baseless hunch. You need to build your case so that your wife cannot deny her forbidden romance. Here are useful tips that will help you catch your cheating wife Keep quiet and lay low If you want to catch your wife, you need to keep quiet about your suspicion. Make her believe that you trust her and do not change your behavior towards her. Remember that women have strong instincts, they can easily know if you are suspecting them just by the way you talk and look at them. Sometimes you need to act stupid or gullible so that your wife will let down her guard. She might be careless and might leave behind clues of her affair if she knows that you are not suspecting her. Jot down your wife’s activities It would really be advisable to jot down your partner’s activities, schedule, children’s school hours, etc. You cannot remember all the details, especially if you are hurting inside. Thus, you really need to keep a journal or notebook. Knowing the schedule of your children’s activities, her office hours or even her friends’ birthday will help you know when she is lying. Look for a pattern Try to find a pattern in your wife’s daily activities. When does she usually stay up late in the office or visit a friend’s house? If on Wednesdays it takes her four hours to buy groceries, you might want to follow her or ask somebody to check her out. You should also check your phone records. Check the numbers she dialed using her mobile phone. If you do not recognize a number that keeps on popping out, you might want to check that number out. Check for receipts and other incriminating evidence You need to keep an eye on her belonging. Does she have new sexy lingerie in the laundry hamper that you never laid eyes on? Is she wearing a new perfume? Be observant. Go home or visit her office unexpectedly Tell your wife that you are going home late, and then surprise her by arriving early. You could also visit her office at lunch or in the afternoon. Bring her food or flowers so that she would not feel that you are spying on her. Check email records and computer usage It is wise to buy computer spy software that will help track down computer activities of your wife. Such computer monitoring programs will help you uncover deleted messages and emails, and even provide you with log-on names and passwords. Once you have gathered enough proof about your wife’s extramarital affairs, think of what action you want to take. Do you want to continue the relationship? Do you want a divorce? Think of your children and how this will affect them. Never confront your wife about her affairs without a plan of action. How to Catch a Cheating Wife Confirm Your Suspicions. A Unique Marketing Spin for a Coffee Shop

By William Dupree Three business partners contacted me about creating a marketing plan for a coffee shop that they were opening in Greenwich Village in New York City. They had already leased a 3000 sq. foot space, which is very large for a coffee shop. They had not worked out what type of food or coffee they would serve. The location was too large for it to survive as just a coffee shop something extra would have to be added. I met with the three partners where I discussed my concerns about there new business venture. I convinced them to follow a plan that I created that would solve the extra space problem for them. Since they had already signed the lease on the location that was to large to succeed as just a coffee shop I created a plan for the coffee shop to be used as a place for community service groups, discussion groups, art and theatre groups, and special interest groups. I arranged for the coffee shop to operate a two-prong strategy. In the morning it will offer coffee, cappuccino, and breakfast muffins and an assortment of pastries to the people in the morning, 65% who are professional. After 9:30 A.M. the coffee house will strive to become a meeting place for various community groups, organizations, associations, and a place for college students to meet after classes. The coffee shop will have a part time program director who will work with the various groups to help facilitate community meetings and set up interesting forums and discussion groups, and to provide other entertainment for the college students. I conducted some research on successful coffee shops and found that the espresso machines contribute well over 50 percent to a coffee shops revenue and even more to its profits. The shops with the best tasting drinks did five to ten times the business of shops with average tasting espresso. To capitalize on this the coffee shop should try to get its espresso drinks to over 50 percent of the drinks served. To accomplish this, the coffee shop set up a separate espresso station, with instruction on how to make a great espresso. The coffee shop will set its pricing approximately 25 percent below typical Starbucks pricing. The key to the coffee shop is the merchandising and taste of its specialty drinks, which involves having the right coffeemaker and coffee, and people who understand the art of making good coffee. I suggested that the coffee shop purchased a high-end cappuccino coffeemaker that has a shiny copper and bronze exterior that can be set out in a separate station to attract interest to specialty coffees. Two employees along with the manager were trained in the proper technique of making specialty coffee drinks. I worked with the part time program and sales director with finding groups and creating groups that will hold meetings in the coffee shop. A discount was offered to any group or individual who would bring in groups. I created a web site explaining what the coffee shop has to offer, and what meetings are taking place and how they can attend these meetings. The coffee shop will send out coupons to groups offering a 25-percent-off discount. I bought a list from a list broker of organizations, associations, and local community groups in the area. I wrote solicitation letters to them explaining what services the coffee shop had to offer. I created online discussion groups that would involve potential clients for the coffee shop. Articles were written for on line publication for the organizations, associations, and local community groups that held meetings at the coffee shop. These articles contained links to the web site for the coffee shop that would list the upcoming events and discussions that would be held at the coffee shop. Print ads were also taken out in a small local publication that the targeted market reads. After about 5 months the results of these marketing efforts had paid off. The coffee shops morning business was doing 10 percent better that was forecasted. The coffee shop had 8 regular groups, organizations, and associations holding weekly meetings in the coffee shop. I got permission from the clients who are using the coffee shop for meetings to use there names in the next set of ads that will run, and on the new web site. You must promote your success to get new business. William Dupree is the owner of I.M.P.S. (Interactive Marketing & Promotional Solutions Inc.) What Makes Marketing Work?

By Al Katz Many small businesses have a natural aversion to marketing. Thats understandable because marketing can be intimidating if you dont know what makes marketing work. In my marketing blueprint there are eight steps to successfully generating productive, response driven marketing results. 1. MINDSET Marketing is a mindset. A mindset based on your own integrity and belief in your service. When someone asks you what you do for a living, instead of telling them your profession, begin to think in terms of being a problem solver. Say something like, I help people who enjoy quality keep themselves looking terrific. Or incorporate this problem solving mentality into your advertising messages. Dont use jargon or technical terms. Just speak in terms of solving your target markets problems. Stress benefits, not features and show your customers you value results, not hype. 2. POSITIONING YOURSELF IN THE MARKETPLACE You must finally decide, do you offer full service or are you a discounter. Either way your business, inside and out must reflect this decision. Your personnel, advertising and quality must reflect this positioning statement. Heres a 5 point checklist to help you decide if youre reaching the right market. Ask yourself. 1. Do they have the money? 2. Will theyll pay a premium for better service and quality if necessary? 3. Where is the competition weak in my trading area? 4. Which influential people or companies in my community can I service that will give me credibility and great references? 5. How can I make sure my prospects know they need what we offer? 3. BUILDING PERCEPTIONS If you asked your best, most trusted customer, and I encourage you to do this. What is it that makes your company so good? What do you value about the way your company gets the job done? What do you value about the way your company treats you? What makes marketing work is perception. There is very little difference in most products and services. Companies claim they offer great service and deliver on their promises. To do marketing right you have to consistently build a perception in the mind of the consumer about what makes you different. Is it that youre more trustworthy than your competition? More knowledgeable about solving difficult problem situations? Does your plant have more modern resources or respond quicker to customers requests? What innovative marketing ideas have you implemented recently? Do you have the capacity to service larger corporate clients or the small business market? 4. WRITING A WINNING MARKETING MESSAGE When you sit down to craft a persuasive results oriented marketing message, keep your problem solving mindset and target market in mind and think about what is the reason people need you, specifically to solve your prospects problem. How do you know youve written the right message? When your prospect reads your message and says, Thats Me! For example, if you were a dry cleaner, to position yourself as the tough stain remover a headline like this would command immediate attention, dont you think? Are you constantly switching dry cleaners because of hard to remove stains? See the difference? Use the benefit of your service from your clients point of view. Ask yourself, what is the problem most of my customers face? How can my unique talents, resources, people and services best meet and solve these challenges? This is why non-intrusive marketing vehicles like newsletters, e-zines and community based sponsorships are so persuasive and powerful. You can deliver this message in the form of articles, samples, case studies and educational materials in a way that your customers and prospects will appreciate. As you craft your marketing message make sure to incorporate the winning AIDA formula. Get the attention with a problem solving headline that makes them say Thats Me! Grab their interest next by telling them why youre different and what your service can do that others cannot or will not. Sweeten the deal by attracting desire. Whet their appetitive with an offer so enticing they cannot possibly refuse. Then top it off with a sincere call to action. What should they do now to begin to build a loyal relationship with you? Subscribe to your ezine or newsletter, visit your store for a special in store offer, sign up for pick up and delivery. 5. SENDING OUT YOUR MESSAGES Many small business think every person in their city or town is a prospect for their service. While this sounds like a great concept, it can be disastrous emotionally when you consider your expectations. If you expect 100% and only 5% become customers you may feel like you’re not really accomplishing your goals. So when you’re sending out your messages, keep your target market in mind and hone in on those people who match your perfect customer profile. It is far better to send out a series of messages to fewer prospects than one message to everyone that falls on deaf ears. The purpose of your marketing messages should be to grab the attention of the prospect. If your ad or direct mail pieces looks like every other small business in your area, you don’t have a chance. If your store sign just says RETAILER or XYZ SERVICE without a name, logo, tag line, color scheme, or something to set you apart, you’re just wasting your time and hard earned money. Marketing should be a consistent message generator to a highly targeted audience that attracts attention and breeds familiarity. This marketing process should deliver value in terms of educating the public about your industry in general and about your service in particular. It should lead prospects by the hand, whet their appetites for more information and more contact with you and move them from a prospect to a customer. Proven methods include building trust, what others say about you, what you stand for and say about yourself as a business owner. What contribution are you making to your own community? Which of your prospect’s problems can you solve better than your competition? Why? Think about these questions and let them form the basis for your marketing plan for next year. 6. DELIVERING YOUR SERVICE WITH CARE Once you have your prospects attention and interest, the next step is to build desire. First they have to trust you know what you’re talking about. They have to believe you walk your walk and talk your talk, that your service and quality is as you say it is. Sometimes this requires showing a prospect with a free trial or testimonial from a satisfied customer. It is often said that your reputation as a company is determined by the value of your lowest paid employee. If that employee has a positive attitude, loves coming to work every day, loves what he or she is doing, this enthusiasm will spread like wildfire through the plant, the front counter and on to customers. But if the employee is negative, has a chip on their shoulder, looks at their job as a necessary evil, you’ve got a “turkey” on your hands and need to think about next Thanksgiving, if you get my drift. I recently heard a national speaker talk about great customer service. She said to a crowd of credit union customer service people, “Don’t be just employed, be employable.” This is an attitude you, as the owner of your business need to foster in your people and they in turn will foster goodwill and positive word of mouth to your customers. 7. INFORMATION – FEEDING THE RELATIONSHIP We live in a world of information overload, yet people crave relationships, even with businesses. You have an opportunity with a new customer to deepen your relationship by providing a constant stream of informational resources. Use newsletters, emails, online newsletters, your website, brochures, articles, flyers and presentations to inform customers. Tell them about the environment, your equipment, your employees, how to solve a problem related to your business. Take advantage of the newsletter services in the industry and use them to your advantage – - outsmarting not outspending the competition. 8. SYSTEMIZING YOUR MARKETING AND YOUR LIFE Finally, putting all of these elements together. Begin to formalize the approach you take to marketing. If you wait until a slowdown it may be too late. With a system and plan of action that works consistently for you, not against you, youll be ahead of the game. Systemizing your marketing is merely putting a series of auto-pilot marketing tactics in place that work for you on a consistent basis in attracting new customers and building relationships with current ones. In the meantime your workers and front line staff have to be ready, willing and able to deliver your message of friendly enthusiastic service that is infectious and builds loyalty. Allan J. Weight Control Nemesis: Portion Sizes Creeping Up

By Di Roberts First it was in the fast food industry. You couldn’t buy anything without your friendly server offering to get you a bigger version of it. The good thing was that you also had to pay more for it. Now it seems to be everywhere. Woe betide the eatery, plain or fancy, that hasn’t adjusted the amount of food they deliver as a “portion” upward. Coming in the September issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, will be an article about a study from Rutgers that compares what 177 young adults perceived as normal portions of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items with what a similar group allotted for similar items 20 years ago. The young people were invited to have a free meal at which they were to choose typical portions of eight food and beverage items at breakfast or six items at lunch or dinner. It turned out that the perceptions of typical portion size were drastically increased for items that were served from and consumed from a cup or a bowl. As an example, study authors Jaime Schwartz, M.S., R.D. and Carol Byrd-Bredbenner, Ph.D., R.D., specifically mentioned that the subjects’ ideas of typical portions of orange juice were 40 plus percent larger than 20 years ago. They also mentioned that this amount of juice would provide 50 additional calories and, if one drank that amount every day, it would add up to enough calories to add on five pounds over the course of a year. In all, more than half of the portions selected for breakfast were at least 25 percent higher than chosen by the young people of twenty years ago. For lunch and dinner items, about 70 percent of the portion sizes chosen by today’s young adults were at least 25 percent higher than those of twenty years ago. The investigators also compared the portion sizes considered typical by their group of subjects with the serving size listed on Nutrition Facts panels for those foods and found those labels also were underestimates of what was actually considered a normal serving size by their subjects. So there seems to be an agreement here, between increasing portion sizes and increasing girth for the population. The whole situation is undoubtedly more complicated than can be explained by this one factor, but it could well be a major contributor to the weight control difficulties of many people. If there was any good news in this study, it was that the amount of salad dressing used by the young adults in the current study was actually less than from two decades ago. And, yes, they did eat salad. Perhaps the message from the dieticians that one should not ruin the positive nutritional effects of raw vegetables by coating them in oil and sugar is being heard. That opens up the possibility that further educational efforts might also be effective. Given that many people, perhaps including people near and dear to us, or even our own selves, now think that what constitutes a normal portion is larger than it used to be, how can those of us who would like to control our weights of even lose weight, cope? Here are just a couple of ideas. The first thing in weight control is to learn to sense our body’s signals when it is no longer hungry and respond to them immediately. That requires eating slowly, with full attention on the food at hand, so that you can give our body time to send us satiety signals and pay attention to the signals it is sending. If you really, really pay attention to what you are eating, you will really, really enjoy it more. You also learn what really tastes good to you and won’t want to waste calories or time or taste sensations on junk that just doesn’t measure up. This is also the best strategy for dinner parties or holiday feasts or any occasion where you’re eating food someone else has prepared and they might be insulted if you don’t seem to be eating with pleasure. If you are preparing your own meals, then you can measure everything and put it onto smaller plates or into smaller bowls than usual so it fills the space. Full plate, full stomach, regardless of the size of the plate, right? It actually does help. Also, by measuring things, you get a good idea of what your appropriate serving size looks like so you can judge when you hit the buffet line. Be sure to use a small plate there. Frequent small meals eliminate the psychological need to stoke up. If you have eaten only three hours ago and will eat again in three hours, then you only need true normal portions to keep hunger at bay. This pattern also keeps the metabolism up, making weight loss easier. If you’re eating out, try ordering a full meal, then take half of it home for lunch the next day. The amounts they give you at restaurants these days are so huge, you can easily get two meals out of one and save some dollars, too. Why Eating More Often Will Help You Lose Weight

By Kim Pye People will often look at me in disbelief when I tell them they are not eating often enough. The logical mind wants to think, “If I skip meals … I am bound to lose weight.” WRONG! There has been a ton of research that has proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the body gears down and hangs on when put under this type of stress. I call it “starvation mode.” When your body isn’t receiving nutrients every few hours, your metabolism drops into low, low gear; basically, the rate it maintains while you are asleep. In that state, your body is ultra-conservative. It uses energy very efficiently, and if any nutrients come in, they are immediately stored for fear that it won’t be getting any more for another long period of time. Hence, you will not lose weight and, in fact, may even gain. On the other hand, if you were to begin eating 5-6 small meals every day, in a week or two your body will be convinced that “more nutrients are always coming … on a regular basis”, and you will begin to drop weight almost effortlessly. Hard to believe but its true. Now, an important key is to eat the right small meals every 2-3 hours. You can’t be eating fast food or double fudge brownies and expect the weight to fall off. Of course you need to eat a balanced healthy diet consisting of 7-8 servings of fruit and vegetables, 2-4 servings of grains, 1-3 servings of good fats, 2-3 servings of dairy and 2-3 servings of lean protein. The actual reality is that you will be eating more food then you have probably ever eaten but, because it is the nutrient-packed food that your body needs, you will lose weight with relative ease. So, let’s go through a typical day’s food plan. 7 a.m. – 8 oz glass of purified water, 1-2 eggs, 1 slice hardy multigrain bread, 1-2 teaspoons all fruit, 2 slices turkey bacon, 1 cup decaf or green tea. Midmorning snack – 8 oz water, a small apple or 15 raw almonds. Noon – Ideally, this is your largest meal of the day with 4-6 oz lean protein, 2-3 servings of veggies, 1/2 sweet potato or 1/2-cup brown rice and more water. Afternoon snack – Warm or cold herbal tea, 5-7 Triscuits with a thin coating of peanut butter. Dinner – Very large mixed green salad with all the fixings, put 2-3 oz. of lean meat on it and use balsamic vinegar and olive oil as dressing, more water. Evening – Finally, if you so choose, an evening snack of a small container of no-fat yogurt or 5-7 strawberries cut up and mixed with 1/3 cup of no-fat cottage cheese and, of course, more water. This may seem challenging at first, but over the course of a week or two, as you settle into this food regimen, you will notice that your energy level will markedly increase, you will not have sugar or non-healthy carb carvings and you will sleep much more soundly. Give it a try, and mark my words … you are going to feel wonderful and lose weight to boot. Click on ==>Fitness Tips for more information.
